Early Life and School
The older of two sons, he was born in N.Y.C. in 1895. After the Columbia Grammar School, he studied at the Columbia School of Journalism.
Early Works
In his late teens, he met composer Richard Rodgers with whom he wrote musicals for charity benefits and university shows.
Professional Career
The duo's professional debut “Any Old Place With You” got featured in the 1919 Broadway musical “A Lonely Romeo.” In 1930, they wrote musicals for such films as the 1932 musical comedy “Love me Tonight”, which starred Maurice Chevalier and Jeanette MacDonald. After the pair broke off temporarily in 1943, Hart teamed up with American lyricist Oscar Hammerstein and released “Oklahoma!”
Recognition
“Oklahoma” won a 1944 special Pulitzer Prize. In 1999, his image was featured on a U.S. postage stamp.
