About Oscar Fraley
The American-born writer was best known for the autobiographical memoir “The Untouchables”, which he wrote with Eliot Ness. A product of Woodbury Junior-Senior High School, Fraley was posthumously welcomed into the school’s Hall of Fame in 2010.
Early Life
Fraley grew up in Woodbury, New Jersey. He got hired as a writer and reporter at the United Press International from 1940 to 1965.
Notable Facts
During his journalistic career at UPI, he met American prohibition agent, Ness and hit it off immediately. The idea for “The Untouchables” was hatched over drinks and a conversation that featured Ness' experiences with infamous American gangster Al Capone. The book was eventually published in 1957 and was adapted for a film and TV series of the same title. The reporter authored about 30 books in his lifetime.
Personal Life
Fraley succumbed to heart failure after a surgery to remove a hernia. He was survived by a son.
