About Patsy Donovan
1900 NL stolen base leader Patrick Joseph "Patsy" Donovan was a right fielder and manager in Major League Baseball. The baseball player chalked up a career record of more than 2,500 hits and over 15 home runs.
Early Life
Donovan enjoyed baseball during his youth; he later joined minor league baseball to sharpen his skill in order to play professionally. He began his journey by playing for the London Tecumsehs from 1888 to 1889 until he was called to play professionally in 1890.
Career as a Player
Donovan made his professional debut for the Boston Beaneaters in 1890. He, however, had a short spell with the team as he was scouted by the Brooklyn Bridegrooms later that year. He made appearances for the team over a span of a year. Between 1891 and 1907, he played for teams like Louisville Colonels, Washington Statesmen, and the Brooklyn Superbas. He retired from professional baseball in 1907.
Career as a Coach
The baseball player delved into the coaching world and had the opportunity to first coach the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1879 and 1899. The next team he managed was the St. Louis Cardinals from 1901 to 1903. Donovan also coached other popular baseball teams such as the Washington Senators, Brooklyn Superbas, and the Boston Red Sox.
