About William Shockley
Credited with putting the silicon in Silicon Valley, American physicist and inventor William Shockley’s legacy is largely centered on semiconductors. Following the completion of his PhD studies in 1936, he worked at Bell Labs, where his contributions to the research on semiconductors and transistor effect discovery brought him immense fame. His Shockley Semiconductor Laboratory, established in 1956 was the first high tech company in the present-day Silicon Valley. In his later life, his views on eugenics and race made him a controversial figure.
Family Life
He grew up in Palo Alto, California as the son of May Bradford, a mining surveyor and William Hillman Shockley, a mining engineer. He had three children with Jean Bailey, his first wife. He was later married to a woman named Emmy Lanning.
Achievements
He won a Nobel Prize in Physics in 1956. He also received the Comstock Prize in Physics and IEEE Medal of Honor.
Death
He died on August 12, 1989 from prostate cancer.
