About Arthur Sullivan
Sir Arthur Seymour Sullivan, famously called Arthur Sullivan, was a great 19th-century English composer and a pivotal figure in forming the unique English version of the operetta. He is also remembered for his various operatic collaborations with the great dramatist W.S. Gilbert.
Early Life & Education
He performed as a soloist in the Chapel Royal during his early years and wrote his first anthem at age eight. At age 14, in 1856, the “Royal Academy of Music” awarded him a Mendelssohn Scholarship, granting him studies at the academy and the Leipzig Conservatoire. His graduation composition, an incidental song to Shakespeare’s “The Tempest,” received huge acclaim on its debut performance in London, England.
“L'Île Enchantée” and “Overture di Ballo” were among his earliest notable compositions.
Major Works
He is famed for making fourteen operatic collaborations with the great playwright W. S. Gilbert, which notably included “The Mikado,” “The Pirates of Penzance,” and “HMS Pinafore.”
Sullivan’s compositions include twenty-four operas, eleven significant orchestral works, ten choral and oratorio works, two ballets, incidental music for numerous plays, and many church pieces, songs, and chamber pieces. He is also known for composing famous hymns such as “The Lost Chord” and “Onward, Christian Soldiers.”
Cause of Death
The composer died of heart failure in London, England.
