About Charles Sanders Peirce
Generally regarded as a philosopher, Charles Sanders Peirce also researched in the fields of logic, mathematics, statistics, experimental psychology, metrology, chemistry and the history of science.
He is the founder of semiotics, a branch of logic that focuses on the study of sign processes. He formulated the concepts of abductive reasoning, mathematical induction and deductive reasoning. He has been referred to as “the father of pragmatism”.
Family Life
His father was the noted American mathematician Benjamin Peirce and his older brother, James Mills Peirce also became a mathematician. His mother’s name was Sarah Hunt Mills. His first marriage to 19th-century feminist and author Harriet Melusina Fay failed and it ended in divorce in 1883. He married a woman named Juliette afterwards. He died as a childless man.
Death
He died on April 19, 1914.
