About Christiaan Barnard
During the early years of his career, Christiaan Barnard worked in numerous medical institutions like Groote Schuur Hospital, and the City Hospital. He later started research on the intestinal atresia condition and used dogs as his subjects.
The South African surgeon moved to the United States in 1955 and began working with fellow surgeon Owen Harding Wangensteen. In 1967, he shocked the world when he performed a human-to-human heart transfer. This placed him in the history books as the first person to achieve that.
Family
His father was called Adam Barnard, and had four siblings named Abraham, Johannes, Chris, and Marius Stephanus Barnard. He and Aletta Gertruida Louw, his first wife, had two kids named Andre, and Deirdre.
He married Barbara Zoellner in 1970 and also had two children with her. Their children are Christiaan Jr., and Frederick. He had a couple of children with model Karin Setzkorn.
Education
He was a student of Beaufort West High School before he had admission to the University of Cape Town Medical School.
Trivia
He published many books with some titled “Your Healthy Heart” and “The Best Medicine”.
His promotional campaign for the Glycel skin cream had a negative impact on his reputation.
