About Edgar Lee Masters
1942 winner of the Robert Frost Medal award, Edgar Lee Masters, was a lawyer and renowned poet. He rose to fame after publishing one of his most famous works "Spoon River Anthology" in 1915.
Early Life
The poet was born to Emma J. Dexter and Hardin Wallace Masters. His father was a lawyer who was not financially successful. As he grew up, financial issues remained constant in the Masters' household.
Edgar Lee Masters wanted nothing more than to attend college after graduating. He was able to get himself enrolled in Knox College. Unfortunately, financial constraints led him to drop out of school and study independently.
Career
Edgar Lee Masters was admitted to the Illinois bar and established a law partnership in 1893. He continued to pursue his love for poetry; and his first poetry work, called "A Book of Verses" (1898), gained much recognition. He went on to create other literary marvels such as "Starved Rock" in 1919, "Poems of People" in 1936, and "Silence" in 1946. Masters also wrote novels such as "Mitch Mille" in 1920 and "The Tale of Chicago" in 1933.
Personal Life
The poet was married to Helen M. Jenkins from 1898 to 1923.
Awards
In 1936, Masters received the Mark Twain Silver Medal. In 1941, he was honored with the Poetry Society of America Medal. A year later, he became a fellow at the Academy of American Poets.
In 1944, the Shelley Memorial Award was bestowed upon him. The poet was posthumously inducted into the Chicago Literary Hall of Fame in 2014.
