About Alter Esselin
Over the course of 50 years, Russian poet Alter Esselin wrote several poems in his native Yiddish language, most famous among them are “Kundus” and “Di goldene keyt.” Most of his poems often portrayed dark and broody themes, which Esselin experienced in his past and hoped to overcome in the future.
Biography
Esselin was born in Tchernigov, Russia. After the death of his father, he was forced to drop out of school to get an apprenticeship carpentry job. Although he would remain a carpenter for the rest of his life, he was still passionate about writing and poetry.
In 1904, Esselin emigrated to the United States, where he joined a carpenter’s Union and took up writing Yiddish poems. He travelled extensively around the US before settling in Chicago to play an active role in the Yiddish literary world. He wrote several poems and books, including “Forverts”, and “Unter der last.”
Esseline died in 1974.
Family
He was married twice. Esselin married his second wife, Becky, in the mid-1920s.
