About Isaac Bashevis Singer
Singer is well-known as a short stories writer. His work that portrayed the Polish-Jewish traditions and culture earned him a Nobel Prize in Literature and put his name out there.
Personal Life
His name in Polish was Icek Hersz Zynger. Despite having a lot of history about him, his date of birth was uncertain. His father was a rabbi and his mother was the child of a rabbi. His family separated when the World war started and had to move with his mother and brother. He however struggled with both school and work that he decided he was useless and gave up.
In 1923, however, he was offered a proofreading job by his senior brother for a Jewish Magazine. He married Alma Wassermann in 1940.
Career
In 1925, he released the story “Oyf der Elter”. During the Literarishe Bletter competition his story was chosen for the win. He later released the novel “Satan in Goray” in parts.
In 1962, he worked on “The Slave”. He ended up working on over fifteen novels and over ten books for children. Isaac’s works were written and published in Yuddish.
Death
In July 1991, after suffering from stroke attacks, he died.
