About Carlisle Floyd
It’s fair to say that Carlisle Floyd inherited his musical skills from his parents. Though he was exposed to music at an early age, he began pursuing a career in the field after he graduated from the university. He released his first opera in 1949 which was titled “Slow Dusk”.
Mostly described as "Father of American opera", Floyd composed many operas with some titled “Susannah”, “Flower and Hawk” and “Cold Sassy Tree”.
Private Life
His mum taught him how to play the piano, while his dad was a minister of the Methodist church.
Education
He continued his music lesson at Converse College. He later attended Syracuse University where he earned a degree in Music.
Awards
He became a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 2001. Three years later, he received a National Medal of Arts. He was also honored with Guggenheim Fellowship.
Facts
He was trained by Ernst Bacon.
He also worked with the Florida State University for more than three decades.
He was one of the founders of the Houston Opera Studio.
