About Margaret Fuller
Sarah Margaret Fuller was an American journalist, author, and women’s rights advocate. She is best known for her book “Woman in Nineteenth Century”, which is regarded as one of the first major feminine literary works in the United States. She died at 40 while at sea.
Childhood
Fuller was the first-born child of Thomas Fuller Jr and Margaret Crane. Thomas, a lawyer, was determined to give her an exceptional education. He taught Fuller, and soon, she was well-versed in various disciplines, including Latin, mathematics, and history. However, her intensive learning caused her to suffer from insomnia and migraines for the rest of her life.
Literary Career and Feminist Movement
After her father died in 1835, Fuller took up teaching, but she still dreamed of becoming a journalist and translator. In 1839, she published her first translation of “Eckermann’s Conversations with Goethe” and formed friendships with notable authors, including Elizabeth Peabody and Ralph Waldo Emerson. By 1840, she became the “The Dial” editor, where she wrote reviews, critiques, and poetry.
Fuller also taught classes for women in literature, education, and philosophy to give them a voice in society. These classes inspired her to write “Woman in the Nineteenth Century.”
Personal Life
Fuller was involved in a serious relationship with Italian lieutenant Marchese Giovanni Ossoli. They had a son together.
Notable Accomplishment
One hundred and forty-five years after her death, Fuller was inducted into the National Women’s Hall of Fame.
